Choosing the Right Facial Plastic Surgeon for a Facelift

To whom should you trust your face?

Selecting the correct facial plastic surgeon for your facelift or other procedures is essential. Most of us have heard horror stories of procedures gone wrong, and we’ve seen the
images of renowned celebrities who looked anything but natural following an inferior surgery. Whenever you opt to have any procedure performed, understand that while there are some risks
involved, you can greatly reduce those risks by choosing a board-certified, and experienced, physician.

How can you ensure that you pick the right surgeon? Price alone should never be a determining factor; in fact, costs really need to be the last thing you consider. Here are essential aspects to consider when deciding on a suitable facial plastic surgeon.

Credentials:

Not only should your physician be highly credentialed by a recognized association like the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), but they should also be board-certified, which means the surgeon has completed additional training in this specialty. Dr. Daniel Daube meets and exceeds these requirements in that he is the region’s only Board-Certified and Fellowship-trained Facial Plastic Surgeon.

Experience:

While training and education are of the utmost importance, the physician’s experience is also very significant. Once you are comfortable with the doctor’s qualifications, have a candid conversation with them regarding the numbers of procedures they have done similar to the surgery you are considering. Remember, there are different techniques for conducting facelifts, and at Gulf Coast Facial Plastics, Dr. Daube believes in using the Gold Standard technique.

All procedures offer different pros and cons, and your doctor will advise you accordingly. Don’t forget to inquire about aftercare to get optimum results.

Reviews:

Before you select your surgeon, make certain you check sites like Healthgrades.com, UCompareHealthcare.com, and Google to name just a few. These sites provide patients with an opportunity to critique doctors firsthand. Here you will find people who have gone through procedures like the one you are considering and states whether they were satisfied with the surgeon’s level of competence or not. However, know some reviews may, or may not, be subjective, so take negative reviews into consideration, and then discuss any concerns you may have directly with the doctor.

Communication:

A professional facial plastic surgeon should be someone with whom it is easy to communicate, even about sensitive issues like questionable reviews. In addition, they need to take time to ensure you understand the procedure and the specific techniques used during surgery. You should feel comfortable with the physician and be able to communicate easily with them as well as their staff.

Hospital Privileges:

Most surgeons provide outpatient services, but be certain to ask if the doctor also has hospital privileges. Why is this important? Hospitals do background checks before hiring or permitting a physician to practice on their premises. If a doctor isn’t granted hospital privileges, then that should be a “red flag” to the potential patient.

These are just a few tips when deciding on the right facial plastic surgeon for your needs. Word-of-mouth marketing has been very important in Dr. Daube’s more than 20-year career, so be sure to talk to others about their experiences at Gulf Coast Facial Plastics. We strive to provide quality medical care enhanced by compassion and understanding for the needs of our patients.

The Benefits of Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid surgery, medically referred to as blepharoplasty, is done for a variety of reasons. This procedure is mainly performed for aesthetic appeal, but can also address physical effects and concerns from drooping or sagging eyelids. No matter the patient’s desire (or need) for eyelid surgery, the benefits are substantial. Below we have laid out a few of the benefits of eyelid surgery.

Look Years Younger

When eyelids begin to droop and sag, primarily due to age, the effect is an older or more tired appearance. The weakened muscles create wrinkles and make eyes appear smaller and even partially closed depending on the severity of the sagging. This results in a more “mature” look and can become more noticeable over time. Correcting this condition will open your eyes, making your face look uplifted and youthful. The procedure can take years off your appearance, even without any other work done to your face.

Better Makeup Application

It can be challenging to apply makeup when your eyelids are not quite cooperating. The sagginess and droopiness can make it difficult to put on makeup as intended. The creases and fine lines can cause eyeshadow to settle in the wrong places. Mascara can wind up on the skin of your eyelids and eyeliner may look messy, uneven, and unnatural. When eyelid surgery is complete, makeup is able to be applied effortlessly and may even stay on longer.

Eliminate Physical Issues

Beauty benefits aside, eyelid surgery can help people with more extreme issues such as sight impairment and discomfort. When sagging and drooping eyelids affect everyday tasks and to-dos, beauty becomes a secondary perk. The lift from eyelid surgery can help alleviate this problem, allowing for better visibility and a return to normal functionality.

If you are over 35 years of age or have a genetic predisposition to droopy, sagging eyelids, you may be a good candidate for eyelid surgery. The benefits are plentiful and the results can be remarkable. Contact Gulf Coast Facial Plastics to schedule a consultation today!

The Ins and Outs of Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Do your ears stick out too far? Do you have a birth defect or an old sports injury? Maybe your ears are disproportionate to the rest of your features, or you need to have corrective surgery to fix issues from a previous surgery. Otoplasty is the perfect solution to alter your ears so that they are more proportionate with the rest of your features.

What is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty refers to cosmetic ear surgery, allowing patients to alter the shape, position, or size of their ears. Otoplasty does not change the actual location of your ears or your hearing, so it is considered a cosmetic procedure that includes the resculpting of the ear fold, pinning the ears back closer to the head. Surgery is generally recommended for both ears to ensure best symmetry.

Who is a candidate?

Otoplasty can be an option for people of almost all ages. This procedure can be performed on younger individuals who have experience developmental issues with their ears. It can also be performed on older individuals who may have experienced an injury to the ear or are just unhappy with the look of their ears.

This procedure is a popular way to correct cauliflower ear, or perichondrial hematoma. Cauliflower ear is a common occurrence when athletes neglect to wear protective headgear, causing tissue damage within the ear from repeated battery. Blood clots kill off healthy cartilage, creating thick scar tissue that changes the shape of the ear, especially when new cartilage begins to grow.

What does the procedure entail?

Otoplasty is an outpatient procedure performed within our state-of-the-art surgical facility.
Depending on your case, you may require sedation (local anesthesia) or full general anesthesia. Incisions are typically made both behind the ears and in the inner ears. The cartilage is repositioned, excess cartilage and skin is removed, and then the ear is closed with internal and external stitches as necessary. Some stitches may require removal, but most will safely and easily dissolve on their own. The entire surgery only takes two to three hours for both ears, and you’ll be able to resume regular schedule within just a week.

After the surgery, you may experience some temporary bruising and swelling. Your ears will be bandaged for support and protection. It will take a few days for the swelling to go down. In some cases, additional procedures may be required in order to perfect the shape.

Trusting the professionals, like our team at Gulf Coast Facial Plastics, will greatly minimize risks like scarring, asymmetry from the healing process, and skin sensitivity. We will review your medical history and perform an in-office examination before discussing your treatment options. Is Microneedling Right for You?

Microneedling is a simple cosmetic treatment used to help rejuvenate the look of facial skin. This therapy can restore the quality of skin and combat of the signs of aging. Best of all, microneedling is not surgical and does not require much downtime.

The Microneedling Procedure

To generate more of the skin’s natural collagen production, a handheld instrument known as a dermaroller is rolled across areas of the face and other parts of the body where the skin’s quality has been compromised. This dermaroller, which resembles a small paint roller, is made up of small needles that gently penetrate the skin’s surface to stimulate collagen production. The increase in collagen can make skin look more youthful by filling in areas that appear hollow due to aging. Microneedling is an outpatient treatment that can be completed in a single office visit.

After the Treatment

Your skin may look red and swollen immediately following your procedure; however, you should also expect your treated area to have a more buoyant and refreshed appearance. To maintain results, your treatment provider may recommend you return every four to six weeks for additional sessions.

Additional Benefits

In addition to increasing skin buoyancy and youthfulness, microneedling can hide the appearance of scars and pockmarks caused by acne. This treatment can even remove blackheads, blemishes and excessive skin oil. If you experience hyperpigmentation, microneedling has the ability to even skin tone. The procedure is helpful in reversing some of the effects of sun damage as well.

Ideal Candidates

If you are in good health and have no current infections, you are likely a good candidate for microneedling. This treatment is generally not recommended for children and teens. If you are pregnant, take certain medications, or have had skin radiation therapy within the past year, microneedling is not recommended for you. You should also avoid this procedure if you have a skin condition such as rosacea, eczema, or psoriasis.

Microneedling offers many benefits and can dramatically enhance the look of your skin. If you are interested in learning more about this procedure, contact Gulf Coast Facial Plastics today to schedule a consultation!

The Ins and Outs of Laser Hair Removal

Removing unwanted hair is not always as easy as it sounds. Waxing and shaving can be both painful as well as time-consuming. Fortunately, permanent hair removal options are available at Gulf Coast Facial Plastics.

Laser hair removal involves using highly concentrated light beams on hair follicles. The follicles absorb the light, which ultimately eliminates them and helps to prevent future hair growth. This treatment is safe and can be used on a variety of areas on the body.

Step 1: The Consultation
If you are interested in laser hair removal, you must start with a consultation. Dr. Daniel Daube will assess the condition and thickness of your hair, and provide you with an estimate of the number of sessions you will need to complete the process. He may perform a test on a small patch of your body to determine if there may be an adverse reaction to the treatment.

Step 2: The First Appointment
During the first treatment, you’ll be given safety goggles to protect your eyes from the bright light produced by the laser. Dr. Daube will then mark your skin to section off the area the laser will be targeting. A gel will be applied to make it easy for the laser to glide across your skin.

You may feel discomfort during the procedure in areas where your skin is the most sensitive, like the bikini line or your upper lip. As you continue with your sessions, you’ll find your discomfort will decrease.

Step 3: Recovery
After your laser hair removal procedure, it is important to avoid direct sunlight; therefore, fall and winter months are typically the best time to receive this laser treatment. You may experience redness after the procedure; however, this will fade over time

In the days after your first treatments, you’ll see the hairs on the targeted areas start to fall out. As your sessions continue, you’ll realize that your hair is relatively non-existent in most areas, and in others, the hair is barely noticeable.

If you are tired of dealing with body hair, laser hair removal may be right for you. Contact us at Gulf Coast Facial Plastics to schedule your consultation and say goodbye to unwanted hair for good!

How to Keep Your Skin Healthy Year-Round

Just as the seasons change, so should your skincare routine. Due to the changes in temperature, sun exposure, and moisture in the air throughout the year, it is important to modify your skincare routine accordingly. Keep these tips in mind when planning your skincare regimen:

Clean and Clear in Fall

After the intense heat of the summer sun begins to fade, your skin needs to repair itself, especially if you’ve spent a lot of time outdoors. The shift into the cooler months of the year is the perfect opportunity to focus on rejuvenation.

During the fall, look for ways to let your skin rest and treat any blemishes or damage from the sun before attempting deep exfoliation treatments. Creamy moisturizers and gentle antioxidants are recommended during this time of year to prepare your skin for the dry, cold months ahead.

Hydration Throughout Winter

As the temperature drops in winter, the air becomes drier. Chapped cheeks, lips, and hands can become an issue without proper hydration. Make sure to drink enough water so you can hydrate your skin from the inside out. Foam or cream cleansers can help restore moisture in your skin.

Renew and Refresh in Spring

Wake up your skin in the spring with a routine that includes more exfoliation to get rid of any winter dullness and dead cells. This is the perfect time of year to try a more vigorous cleansing routine since the return of ambient humidity, combined with colder air, doesn’t leave your skin as susceptible to drying out.

Spring is also the time to prepare your skin for the sun exposure it will receive in the approaching summer months. Consider scheduling any important skin care procedures before the hot weather sets in(,) when the risk of sun damage increases. The transition from heavy winter moisturizers to lighter lotions that keep you hydrated without feeling greasy. Our practice has specially formulated products to fit any skin type. Ask our Aesthetician for details.

Sun-Kissed Glow for Summer

While sun protection is a year-round need, the summer months present the highest risk for sun damage, so make sure you find products that work best for your skin. A higher SPF doesn’t have to mean a thick, oily formula that can leave a filmy or sticky residue behind. It’s okay to use one protective moisturizer for your face and another for your body, especially if you’re already prone to breakouts.

Stay cool and clean with face and body mists that refresh and hydrate you throughout the day, and don’t forget to moisturize well after every shower. Frequent exfoliation will keep your skin healthy and bright to retain that summer glow. However, without proper toning and hydration, you may increase the chance of damage during this season.

The needs of your skin will change drastically throughout the year, so it is important to change your routine with the seasons. By adjusting for temperatures and seasonal shifts, you can make sure your skin is healthy and vibrant all year long!

Skeletal Contouring: What Is It? And, Who Is a Candidate?

Skeletal contouring is a procedure used to subtly change an individual’s facial structure by manipulating the shape of the facial bones. Skeletal contouring focuses mostly on the nose, jawline, cheeks, and forehead.

What is Skeletal Contouring?

The method of skeletal contouring varies greatly from patient to patient. In all cases, facial bones are changed in some way. Grafting can be used to increase the size of a section of the face. The procedure can also involve bone shaving to decrease or sharpen facial sections, or to simply reshape the bone. Skeletal contouring can give patients a stronger jawline, more or less prominent facial features, and a different nose shape.

Who is a Good Candidate for Skeletal Contouring?

A person may be a candidate for skeletal contouring for several reasons. If you have been involved in an accident or suffered trauma to the face, skeletal contouring can be used to help cover up the damage and return your face to its original appearance. Or, if you simply do not like the appearance of your jawline, nose, or cheeks, skeletal contouring can be used to perfect your features.

What to Expect During the Skeletal Contouring Procedure

Prior to surgery, patients will be given a general anesthetic. Once the procedure has been completed, there may be some noticeable bruising, which should go away in one to four weeks.

After surgery, it is important to keep your head elevated to assist with blood flow. Do not lay flat or sleep on your back. Avoid bending or picking up heavy objects. Also, avoid direct sunlight so your incisions can heal properly

If you have suffered facial trauma, or simply want to change your facial features for cosmetic purposes, skeletal contouring may be for you. Call our office today to set up a free consultation!

The Benefits of Skin Resurfacing

Keeping your skin healthy and vibrant is something many people struggle with. One treatment that can help fight the effects of aging and damaged skin is skin resurfacing. Skin resurfacing uses a carbon dioxide laser to combat a variety of issues. Some of the benefits of skin resurfacing treatment include:

Minimization of Wrinkles and Fine Lines

Both aging and sun exposure can lead to fine lines and wrinkles. These are especially prevalent around the eyes and mouth. Skin resurfacing can reduce the appearance of these creases, and give your face a healthier and smoother appearance.

Reduction of Enlarged Pores

Large pores are often attributed to age and genetics. Larger pores cause the skin to appear bumpy and uneven. Skin resurfacing evens skin tone and improves skin texture, mitigating the appearance of enlarged pores. Your skin will have a smoother, more even look with skin resurfacing.

Treatment of Discoloration, Redness, or Spots

Skin discoloration, redness, and spots can be the result of aging, sun exposure, or issues with skin pigmentation. Regardless of the cause or the particular type of discoloration, skin resurfacing can assist in correcting pigmentation and help eliminate any brown spots, providing you with a more balanced, even skin tone.

Encouragement of Collagen Production and Skin Tightening

Unfortunately, as you age, your skin can begin to lose its elasticity. Skin resurfacing combats this in two ways. First, it enhances skin tone, tightening the skin so it appears youthful once again. Second, it encourages new collagen production in those areas of treatment. It also promotes greater collagen absorption in areas surrounding the treated sections.

If you suffer from any of these skin conditions, or just want to improve the general appearance of your skin, skin resurfacing may be an option for you. Call Gulf Coast Facial Plastics today to learn more about how your appearance can be enhanced by skin resurfacing!
